As an art psychotherapist, I’ve seen first-hand how creativity and art-making can transform people’s lives. What starts as a doodle, a scribble or a play around with materials can become something deeper, with the art offering a doorway into someone’s inner world. I’ve witnessed pain, pride, love, fear and immense courage emerge from a crayon, a paintbrush or a scrap of fabric
I know the power art therapy has to help people see themselves differently; to reconnect with forgotten or overlooked parts of themselves, to challenge themselves to venture into uncharted waters, and to discover something new about who they are
I know the power art therapy has to heal
But I also know there are barriers
Here in the UK, art therapists are in short supply. Many work within specific services or with particular client groups, and those services can be underfunded and difficult to access. Private art therapy can offer another route, but places are limited, and the cost can simply be out of reach for many people
That’s why I started Art is Therapy, a mail club designed to bring a little taste of art therapy to your door
This is a mail club like no other. Each month, a little envelope arrives through your letterbox, offering you the opportunity to turn inwards through creativity and art-making; slowly, gently, and at your own pace
Each month’s envelope explores an aspect of self, with a creative prompt, reflective questions and a handful of extra creative surprises inspired by art therapy. Everything is designed to be approachable, reflective and unhurried; a chance to step away from screens, make something with your hands, and spend a little time getting to know yourself in the process
Each envelope includes:
A few mini creative goodies to decorate your journal, experiment with, or simply play around with
A thoughtful letter from me, exploring my musings on that month’s theme
An art-therapy-inspired creative prompt, inviting you to make a piece of art that holds a part of you or your inner world
A guided self-reflection, with questions encouraging you to explore your conscious and unconscious responses to the art-making process
A limited-edition Art print, featuring a reflective art piece made by me, around the theme of the month
These letters are not therapy, nor are they intended to be a replacement for therapy. They are inspired by my practice as an art psychotherapist and offered as an invitation: to slow down, make something imperfect, and spend time getting to know yourself through creativity, intuition, experimentation and play
This is your invitation to truly meet yourself;
one envelope at a time
one month at a time
one art-piece at a time
